Mary L. Jackson's Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Louise Dorn Jackson passed away on October 1, 2018, in Castro Valley, CA. Mary was born on September 2, 1941 in Houston, TX to Mary Loretta St. Julian and Robert Dorn. Mary moved to Oakland CA with her mother and older brother, James Dorn III in 1947.
Mary graduated from McClymonds High School in 1959 and received an Associate Degree from Laney College. Mary had a successful career as a social worker and later federal employee at Naval Air Station, Alameda. She retired in 1992 as a quality assurance supervisor. Mary loved working in a field that was dominated by men. She took pride in retiring with the high rank of GS 12
On January 21, 1969, Mary married Harry Jackson. During their 29 year marriage, they raised two children Anthony (Tony) Banks, Sr and Kamilah (Kami) Jackson. Harry and Mary raised their children in the Catholic Church. Mary was an active member in the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver, court 95 and fourth degree. She held several offices, including Grand Lady of court 95 and National Treasurer.
Mary was a fun, loving welcoming person. Everyone loved going to aunt “Mel” and uncle Harry’s house. Mary was always the life of any party. She loved to dance and sing. She took pride in knowing the history of her family. Her late uncle, Milton St. Julian, nicknamed her Miss AT&T, so it was heartbreaking for Mary and her family and friends when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
In passing, Mary leaves to cherish her memories her son Anthony Banks, Sr (Sharon), daughter Kamilah “Kami” Jackson. Grandchildren Anthony Banks, Jr (Nina), Matthew Banks (Jessica) and Kayla Romans. Great Grandchildren Sophie Banks, Jack Banks and Alexander Banks and a host of nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, sister-in-laws and cousins, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ and Claverism.
Mary is proceeded in death by her husband Harry Jackson, parents Mary and Council Hodges, brother James Dorn III and granddaughter Lauren Jackson.
Mary was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmothers, aunt, cousin and friend. She was thoughtful, kind, loving and caring. She will be remembered by all whose lives she touched.
