I remember when we were little kids visiting the church on Popular Street in West Oakland with my Aunt Mattie (Big Mama). But my most significant memory was my 8-year-old birthday party in 1963. It was the day Pastor Billy Sheard and First Lady Mary Sheard visited Big Mama at the 6th Street house in Berkeley. In the old Southern tradition, when the Pastor visited, there was traditionally a big spread of food. Then with Pastor Sheard and First Lady Mary Sheard visiting on my birthday, their visit made my birthday the biggest Birthday party ever for an 8-year-old. We had a big barbeque, lots of food and cake. There were about a dozen watermelons, it was the works for a birthday party. Pastor Sheard had a big family, so when his whole family came, there were many kids at my Birthday party and we all played together and had a lot of fun. Big Mama made the biggest cake, and before we cut the cake, everybody sang happy birthday to me and then I made a wish and blew out the candles. Unbeknown to me at that time, that years later my brother George would fall in love with Gail, the Pastor's daughter, and they would raise a family together. We grew up as a family in Christ and then family by marriage, too. Over the years, I'll never forget my personal visits with Pastor Sheard and the deep one on one conversations we'd have about faith and salvation. In particular, our conversation on the topic "once saved, always saved" and "can one lose their salvation." I still remember the interesting point Pastor made about Judas. The most endearing memory that stuck with me that I still hold today was what I saw in him in how he looked at Mother Sheard. I believe that as Mother Sheard got older, throughout their years of marriage, he always saw her as the young lady he fell in love with when he swooped her off her feet and married her. During the early years of my marriage, I used to always say to myself that I hope I'm able to see my wife the way Pastor Sheard saw Mother Sheard through the years...and I do... Rest in Power Mother Sheard. We will always remember and love you!
