Mark Stephen Ericsson Esq.'s Obituary
Mark Stephen Ericsson, Esq.
Mark Stephen Ericsson was born January 26, 1946, to Eric and Clara Ericsson in Bellingham, Washington and he died on March 28, 2014 in Oakland, California due to complications from melanoma. Mark lived in Bellingham through high school and attended Stanford University graduating in 1968 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He lived the rest of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In 1978 while still working as a chemical engineer, Mark returned to school and earned a law degree from John F. Kennedy University. He was passionate about the practice of law and his enthusiasm was contagious to those around him. Mark was active in the Contra Costa Bar Association for many years, serving as President in 2006. He also served as Editor of the Contra Costa Lawyers magazine and published over 35 legal articles during his career. He was Chair of the JFK Law Advisory Board and served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Children’s Hospital and Research Foundation. He was named one of Northern California Super Lawyers of 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2012 by Law and Politics magazine and the publishers of San Francisco magazine. Mark loved being a lawyer and was proud to be a partner in the law firm of Youngman and Ericsson.
Mark was interested in all sports, but especially enjoyed playing basketball. Remarkably, he played on a local team for over 25 years. After retiring from basketball Mark resumed playing tennis. He was always a good tennis player. In fact, he played tennis on a statewide level in high school. He was also a sport’s fan, and as a Stanford alumnus, he rooted for the Cardinals for over 40 years. Mark also loved to travel. His adventures took him to many far off places such as England, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Mexico and Hawaii. Mark also spent many vacations at his family’s summer home on Guemes Island in Washington. He enjoyed mingling with the islanders and was quite proficient in boating, fishing, crabbing and clamming.
Mark was an exuberant and kind person and he will be deeply missed by his family
and friends. His wife Janet Ericsson of Piedmont preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Ericsson of Concord; his daughter, Ann Kallberg and four grandchildren, Graeme, Kayleigh, Elin and Elias of Oskarstrom, Sweden; his son Brandon Ericsson of Oakland; his sister, Maryam (Heidi) and her husband Dr. Luther Schutz of Mount Vernon, Washington; his nieces and nephew, Hana, Lusana, Perrin and Reuben, Aunt Carol and many cousins.
Mark we love you and you will always have a special place in our hearts. God bless you and may peace be with you.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Chapel of the Chimes Oakland in the Chimes Chapel at 11:00 A.M., 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA (510) 654-0123. A reception following the service will be at the Piedmont Community Church in Guild Hall, 400 Highland Avenue, Piedmont CA.
