Madie Scott's Obituary
Madie was born in Evergreen, Alabama during the 1930s Great Depression. She was one of eight children. From a very early age, Madie exercised her faith by regularly attending Pleasant Grove AME Church. As a teenager, basketball was her favorite sport and she was a pivotal player on the all-girl’s championship team. Upon completion of high school, Madie shortly thereafter moved to California, joining some of her siblings, as they embarked on their journey in San Francisco as a part of the American migration story.
Upon settling in the city, she fellowshipped at Friendship Baptist Church and sang in their well-known gospel choir before joining Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in the late 1960’s. She cleaned houses during the day while attending nursing school at night. Void of a passion for nursing, she eventually selected a career with the federal government’s United States Postal Service division and retired with 36 years of perfect attendance and numerous merit awards, in which she took remarkable pride. It was here that she built her foundation of ever lasting friendships, which led to meaningful and abundant excursions, with her chosen family.
Quality family time was a fundamental root of Madie’s values. Although not having any biological children, Madie mothered a multitude of babies. Hosting an imponent number of gatherings, Madie fostered a safe and loving environment for her nieces and nephews in her home. Whether a full press and curl, approving your prom outfit, or a tailored to your liking meal was needed, it all was delivered and executed with unconditional love from auntie Madie; but as her nieces and nephews endearingly called her, Mae Mae.
Known for her phenomenal culinary skills, one of Mae Mae’s most treasured love languages, was her food! She delighted in preparing some of her signature dishes of pancakes, turkey wings, collard greens, yams and delectable desserts, such as pound cake or watergate salad; just to name a few. No occasion was complete without at least one of Scott’s dishes. In addition to cooking, Madie’s love for Bay Area sports, particularly The Golden State Warriors & The San Francisco Forty Niners always brought her immense joy. However, no day was completely fulfilled without her daily routine of reading The San Francisco Chronicle and checking in with her loved ones via phone call on their overall well-being.
A bid whist pro, a music connoisseur, a dancer extraordinaire, with two green thumbs from which she grew beautiful plants and adored flowers, as well. Madie established her essence as a head-strong nurturer. Her loving, compassionate, supportive, kind, caring and generous nature exemplified the phenomenal woman she has always been.
Her legacy of love and wisdom she conveyed to her multitude of nieces and nephews and countless friendships will continue to live on through her shared recipes, vast family photo collection and personalized sayings such as “This ain’t no fly by night operation” or “It ain’t nothing for a stepper.”
89 years of hard work and dedication, with a committed faith deserves the reward of an eternal rest and we shall always cherish her loving memory.
