Mabel Josephine Murphy's Obituary
Mabel J. Murphy died on July 31, 2015 at the age of 93. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, she became a registered nurse and joined the U.S. Navy, where she achieved the rank of Lieutenant J.G. She was stationed in Oakland, California and met her husband, Terence, while serving as a navy nurse during World War II at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA. Preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1970, her grandson, Terence, who died in 1990, and her sister Mary Rose, who died in 2011. Mabel is survived by her three sons Terence (Elizabeth), Thomas, and Timothy (Linda), and 7 grandchildren, Alison, Kristen, Rachel, Daniel, Lauren, Michael, and Megan, and 4 great-grandchildren, Ava, Olivia, Brooklyn, and Madison.
After her husband’s death, Mabel returned to full-time work as a cardiac care nurse at Providence Hospital in Oakland. She retired in 1984 but continued working at the hospital as a volunteer. Mabel was an active parishioner at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Oakland for over 60 years, where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Mabel was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and evenings at the theatre in San Francisco.
Mabel will be missed by all of her family and the many friends who knew, loved, and respected her.
Friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service on Thursday at 7:00 pm at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA. Friends are also invited to a celebration of Funeral Mass on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 400 Alcatraz Ave., Oakland, CA 94609. Committal Service to follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, 2560 Church Lane, San Pablo, CA 94806. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Fl., New York, NY 10001 preferred.
