It was sad news for our family today when I heard the news that our beloved Auntie Lut passed away yesterday. She was the older sister of my Dad, Architect Lutgarda Herrera-Obando. As I was growing up she was already in the US but I felt that I knew her all along because my father always told us stories about her. She was generous to us, along with her brothers and sisters, helping us financially when we were in University, when my Papa and Mama was short of money for our tuition fees. She also sent us endless balikbayan packages when we were young, full of Cadbury chocolates, toys, barbie dolls, View Master slides and many more. For that I am always gratefulâ?¦.When we visited her in Piedmont, California with my parents, I was able to personally thank her for their help, to which she replied that that sheâ??s happy to help her beloved brother. We always looked up to her not only for her generosity, but also because she was an accomplished architect. She was the first lady board topnotcher in architecture at the University of Santo Thomas, and after graduation she worked at the prestigious Nakpil Architectural firm in the Philippines. She designed many buildings back home, but the only building I remembered that she told me that she designed was the Mercury Drugstore in Quiapo. So every time I passed by Quiapo I couldnâ??t help but smile and be proud of Ate Lutâ??s project. Ate Lut, I know you are now with Papa and Mama along with your brother Kuya Miguel, Kuya David Kuya Ado, Ate Juana, Lola Baday and Lolo Goyo up in heaven.We love you and may you rest in peace.
