Lucille Joy Markus' Obituary
Lucille was born on February 16, 1918, and passed away peacefully on August 25, 2012. She was born in Brewster, Minnesota, to Naomi and Chester Marsh and was their first of four children (all girls). She moved to Oakland, California in 1942 from Sioux City, Iowa to be closer to her future husband Donald Markus, who was stationed at Camp Roberts in California. She lived with June and Mark Kistner, her Aunt and Uncle. Lucille and Donald married on August 27, 1942 in Berkeley, California. In 1944 she convinced the rest of her family to move to California from Iowa as she felt her father Chester could find a jod on the docks. She and Donald built their home in 1951, where they lived together until Donald passed away on March 26, 1991, after 49 years of marriage. In 2003 her sister Genevieve Buckmaster became very ill and as the oldest sister, she took on the responsibility to look after Genevieve. Lucille continued to live in her home with her sister until July 1, 2007 when she and Genevieve moved into the Carlton Plaza of San Jose, an assisted living facility. Donald and Lucille enjoyed the outdoors as they loved to fish, hunt and to travel. Lucille also enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage. Lucille worked as a retail grocery clerk and took full retirement after 25 years of service. She is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law: Eileen Wagner, Coleen Bravin (Sergio); Nephews and their spouses: Gary Wagner (Barbara), Ivan Wagner III (Randy), Steven Wagner (Kathy), Steven Bravin (Jacky); Niece and spouse: Janet Murray (Tom). She is also survived by 12 great nieces and nephews, and 13 great great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by close cousins Patty Strump and Darlene Hancock and their children.
