I was a colleague of Lorrita's when she worked at Diablo Valley College. She was a wonderful person, a very talented and resourceful librarian, she loved working with students, and brought so much to the library and the college. I'm very saddened to hear of her death. I met Lorrita almost 20 years ago and we became fast friends. Over the years, anytime I visited San Fran/Oakland, I would stay a few extra days to hang out with my friend. During my visits, we would visit coffee houses, jazz clubs, waterfront restaurants, farmers markets and endless drives along the coast. One time, we decided to drive along the coast to a restaurant overlooking the water and a lighthouse where we told fun stories about men, travel and the lasting power of friendship. I agree with Patty that Lorrita laughed with all her heart and always saw a silver lining during life's ups and downs. i remember during one of our last conversations I told her I was more than honored to be her friend and I will always cherish the memories.
Lorrita and I were classmates - Class of 1984 - when Cal was still a library school. We worked together at Oakland Public Library and then later, at Berkeley Public for a bit. One of my greatest memories is seeing Lorrita move to Diablo Valley College where she found her calling with the students and faculty.
Lorrita always had a word of wisdom and encouragement and advising me to slow down or not take myself too seriously. She loved to laugh -that kind of throwing your head back laugh! And that smile! She would light up the room with that smile.
I will miss you my friend - I regret not being more in touch these last years. My deepest sympathies to Lorrita's son and family. As Satia said - she was a gift for all of us.
