Loretta L. Webb
Born: 7/15/1942
Departed: 5/18/2013
Antioch, CA
Loretta L. Webb was born in Corpus Christi, TX., to her parents Pearson L. Jones and Naomi Thomas. At a very young age, her family moved to Portland, OR., where her mother welded rivets onto battleships during World War II. In 1945, the family moved to the Berkeley, CA.
After her parents divorced, her mother married Clyde V. Jackson in 1950, of whom Loretta affectionately called, 'Jackie'. They joined the North Oakland Missionary Baptist Church where the Reverend A.O. Bell was pastor. Loretta had accepted Christ into her life and was active in many church departments and activities.
Loretta attended Oakland Public Schools, graduating from Oakland Technical High School in 1960. Loretta was a member of the school's cheerleader squad there.
Loretta married George C. Webb in 1961, and from this two children were born: George Kenneth Webb and Steven Lloyd Webb. Loretta was a skilled typist, and gained experience working at various locations, including the East Bay Regional Parks and the Oakland Army Base. Loretta then began a job at the Richmond Public Library (at City Hall) when the family moved to Richmond in 1968. Her coworkers treated her very well and took her under their wing... they always gave he rides home at night until the day when the family bought a second car.
Loretta instilled a love of reading in her children. She brought them with her to the library on nights and weekends, and she had them order books from the elemetary school's book club every year. Loretta loved word puzzles and 'brain exercises', and she could put together the most complex jigsaw puzzles with ease.
When the family moved to Hayward, CA. in 1972, Loretta took night classes to complete her degree at Cal-State Hayward, graduating with a B.A. in Sociology. Not stopping there, Loretta continued on at UC-Berkeley where she earned her Masters Degree in Library Science.
Loretta worked as the Church Secretary at North Oakland Missionary Baptist Church. Loretta then worked as a substitute teacher for the Hayward Unified School District, until she successfully landed a permanent job at the Pittsburg Unified School District.
When her marriage ended in 1979, Loretta and her children moved to Berkeley, CA. She was able to earn employment with the Oakland Unified School District, where her more notable assignments were Librarian at Havenscourt Middle School and Castlemont High School.
Loretta was also credentialed to work at the college level. She gained a position as Librarian at Alameda College in Alameda, CA, where she worked a part-time evening schedule for over 10 years.
After the death of her mother Naomi, Loretta retired and moved to Lincoln, CA. Loretta stayed there until her health began to decline. She then moved in October 2012 to live with eldest son, Ken, and his family, where she enjoyed the laughter, relaxation, and comfort there.
Loretta is pre-deceased by her father, Pearson L. Jones, her mother Naomi T. Jackson, her step-father Clyde V. 'Jackie' Jackson, her brother Clyde Victor Jackson, and her brother Pearson Jones, Jr.
Loretta is survived by her loved ones: sons, Ken Webb of Antioch, Ca, and Steve Webb of Oakland, CA; the 'daughter that I wish I had', Susan Muya, brother Charles L. Jackson of Brighton, Colorado; sister Lisa L. Jackson of Brighton, Colorado; sisters-in-law Mary Jackson of Richmond, CA, and Cynthia Jackson of Brighton, Colorado, cousins Gloria Walton of Rio Vista, CA, Chris Sampson of Atlanta, GA, and Mel Renfro of Dallas, TX; nephew Elgin V.
