Lily Miu Au's Obituary
Lily Miu Au
Feb. 14, 1934 – May 28, 2013
Resident of Oakland
Lily Miu Au was born in 1934 in Oakland, where she was raised and lived her entire life. She passed away unexpectedly on May 28, 2013. She was 79.
She was the fifth of six children born to Edward and Lowe Shee Miu.
Lily graduated from Lincoln Grammar School in Oakland Chinatown in 1948, and from Oakland High School in 1952.
She worked at the family-owned grocery store, Cleveland Market, in West Oakland till it closed in 1968.
She met her future husband, George, when she traveled with her father to Hawaii to attend a cousin’s wedding in 1956. George’s uncle played matchmaker, and the two courted while Lily was living in Oakland and George in Honolulu and later Santa Barbara before getting married in May 1960.
George followed his dream of opening his own photography business and took ownership of Mac Iver Studio in Alameda in 1970, where Lily ran the administrative end of it while George took portraits and wedding pictures. George passed away in 1991, but Lily continued at the studio taking passport photos and working as an agent for Western Union. She closed the studio in 1993.
Lily later worked as a cashier for a number of years at Pagano’s Hardware in Alameda.
Bringing great joy to her life was the marriages of her children and the birth of her granddaughter. She loved people and all those she met were touched by her laughter and smile.
She is survived by her daughters Sherry Merideth (Dennis) of Marysville, Wash., and Patty Sakuma (Paul) and their daughter Wendy of Palo Alto; son Robert Au (Stephanie Garrabrant-Sierra) of Orinda; brother Jackson Miu (Connie) of Castro Valley, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Elizabeth Lee, Victoria Lowe and Lillian Fong, and brother Stanley Miu.
Private services will be held. She will be interred at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland.
