Eight years gone. I can hardly believe it. I still sometimes find myself thinking, when wondering about this or that, "I have to ask Joaquin, he would know!"
I met him at Switchboard and knew him at the Downhome Nasties. Always a gentle soul and good person to be around.Bill Kalenborn Great to see you're still with us, Eden.
JOAQUIN SWITCHWas a photographerâ?¦A cookA talented chemistA true lover of womenA supportive friendA motorcycling adventuristA swift and sure master of the English languageAnd a hundred other thingsAnything he could do, he could explainso that I understood itHe was "among the cognoscenti"And from 1968 to 1979,He helped me to be "among the cognoscenti" tooI have not been in touch with him for over thirty yearsAnd I really really miss him
The basic recipe for that gianduia torte is from "Italian Regional Cooking" by Ada Buoni." Of course he used Hobbit magic when he made it, never the same way twice. But I did manage to steal a few of his secrets – adding a couple of glogs of Tuaca to the mix was a favorite.
Hobbit was the first person to turn me on to gourmet food. He was the resident chef for the Downhome Nasties. I will always remember his chocolate hazelnut torte which I ate in 1974 all covered with fresh whipped cream. RIP Hobbit
Though we were not in touch in recent years, Joaquin's presence and personality "loom large" in my life history. He was/is one of the most brilliant individuals it has been my privilege to know and associate with; from him I learned many things. He will always be remembered with affection and admiration; my world is diminished by his absence. And, I confess, I am sure as hell curious about his "other name".
