I knew Kaleph as Kato. We met in 2006 when I joined Gold's Gym on Lake Merritt. Kato was training my best friend Rafiki he was warm, charming and always had time to chat. Even though I was not a client he always made me feel welcome and was generous with his knowledge of the physique. His advice made my work out safer and more effective.When you encountered him outside the gym his warm smile and kind words were wonderful. I no longer live in Oakland, but nearly a day has passed since learning of his health issue that Kato has not been on my mind.We will miss him. My warmest and kindest thoughts go out to his family.Brent Fisher

He introduced me to people as his younger brother. I'm also the person who sold him Big Red and the '76 Chevy Stepside. I'll miss him.

Well, I don't feel worthy of leaving a comment as to a personal relationship with Kato, but I just had to chime in because I saw him everyday. I work the late shift at the gym so we missed actually talking each other as much as I would have liked, but he would always hi-five me on the way out. He & his crew would venture out to walk Lake Merritt, chatting away, always smiling. Everyone I know had only great things to say about him…inspiring stories about health goals they reached because of him & how awesome was. He will truly be missed by all. ??

To The Washington family/friends,Hi, my name is Annette Rodriguez-Oliver. I first knew Mr. Washington, "Kato" in 1996 through my friend Mr. Ed Miller. Kato, my personal trainer at the time, would work me out until my legs would 'wobble" and I couldn't walk some times. He used to make fun of me because I would talk so fast he would say, "What'd you say? You rattle so fast my head still spinning." We then became great friends and he was my angel and savior in my darkest times in life and my brother in life in happy times. God sent him to me and I know why; he was a hero to me and many, many people. He was full of love, life and wisdom–the latter for sure. When I teach my fitness classes now, I use his words of wisdom, "Everyday is your birthday". I continue to this day spreading his words of wisdom and teachings throughout my family, friends and students. Thank you Washington Family and God for sharing him with me and others. He is in my heart forever. xoxoxo
