Juanita Pouncy's Obituary
I go to life and not to death
From darkness to life native sky
I go from sickness and from pain
To health and immortality
Let our farewell then be tearless
Since I bid farewell to tears
Write this day of my departure
Festive in your coming years.
Juanita Jean Pouncy was born June 29, 1929 in El Dorado, Arkansas
to the late Thomas and Mary Ellen Sullivan who were originally from
Cheneyville, Lousiana.
Juanita Pouncy 85, devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great
grandmother entered into rest, quietly with her family by her side, after a
battle with cancer. At an early age, Juanita joined Lee’s Chapel Church in
El Dorado, Arkansas before moving to Oakland, California in 1950 where
she later became a member of the First African Methodist Episcopal
church in Oakland, California.
In the Pouncy family, Juanita could always be counted on to provide the
support, insight and loving attention to family and friends alike. One of
her favorite activities, which was very dear to her heart, was ensuring she
documented her family history as detailed as possible. As such, not only
did she collect a considerable amount of family tree ancestral history,
but she also compiled individual photo albums for remembrance of each
special family occasion. Another activity she enjoyed which many in the
family would marvel at was her unyielding patience in completing jigsaw
puzzles which were very complex and time-consuming.
Juanita was preceded in death by her loving son Russell Tyrone (Darlean)
Pouncy. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of sixty-four
(64) years Russell Pouncy, daughters Dolores Jean (Michael) Hudson,
Brenda Kay (Jerrell) Lewis, all of Oakland, California, and Marva Denise
(Tarrance) Williams of Batesburg, South Carolina. Her Grand Children
Nikkole (Jermaine) Tarver, Sherrell Lewis, Matthew Hudson, Candace
Hudson, all of Oakland California, Russell T. (Kenya) Pouncy, Janayah
Pouncy, and Olivia Pouncy, all of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Adrienne
(Richard) Johnson of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Shannon (Bernard)
Coleman of Hampton, Virginia. Her Great-Grandchildren Kendal,
Jaden, Joshua, Eric, Logan, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Ailee of Upper
Marlboro, Maryland, Kyle and Jerney of Oakland, California. She also
leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Mom, you are loved and will be truly missed by all.
