JOY JEAN (MERYDITH) MITCHELL's Obituary
Joy passed away peacefully at the Pines of Placerville, California on November 21, 2018 where
she resided over the last two years before moving from Oak Manor in Jackson. She was 101
years old. She was born in Piggott, Arkansas on August 16, 1917. Joy graduated from Chico
High School where she also met her future husband Munro. She was married to Rodley Munro
Mitchell in 1935. Joy worked at Kaiser Hospital Corporate Offices as a statistical supervisor until
her retirement at the age of 65. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Orinda Chapter. She
also was a member of the Oakland Business Women’s Organization and was twice the “Woman
of the Year” and had a passion for ballroom dancing. Joy is survived by her son, Delbert
Mitchell of Jackson, California, Lloyd Mitchell of Nevada City, California, and seven
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Munro, her parents, Mabel and
Clarence Merydith, her sister, Erlene (nee Merydith) Colombro, her brothers Ted and Dewey
Merydith and her son, Bruce Mitchell.
Donations in the memory of Joy can be donated to the Shriner’s Hospital, 2425 Stockton
Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95817. Memorial services will take place at Chapel of the Chimes,
4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, California, at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, January 20, 2019 in the Julia
Morgan Chapel.
