John Lawrence Knolls passed away in Oakland, California, on July 30th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 69 years old.
John was born in Oakland, California, to Glen Joseph Knolls and Angus Dorothy Leskanic on February 20, 1956, and spent his life serving the community he loved. A dedicated garbage man for his entire career, John took great pride in his work and the connections he built along the way.
After retiring, John poured his energy into cooking for his family, becoming quite the chef. He also took boundless joy in caring for his two beloved pit bulls, Lucca and Gia. John truly embodied the enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. Known for his generosity and unwavering care for others, John’s quiet strength and kind heart left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
He loved good food, his family, and Frank Sinatra. John loved hosting barbecues for his family and friends, showcasing his amazing grilling skills. Those who knew John will remember him for his humor, his loyalty, and his ability to make every gathering warmer and brighter.
John was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Michael Knolls. John is survived by his adoring wife, Theresa, and his loving children, Mary Jane, Eddie, and Angelica. John also leaves behind family members Giovanna, Peter, Wendy, Lauren, Madisen, Tommy, and Mia – all of whom held him in the highest regard and adored him beyond words. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and unconditional love to all who knew him, and his memory will be forever treasured in their hearts.
May we think of John always finding joy and peace as he “plays among the stars” — forever at home in the light he brought to all of us.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Columba Catholic Church, 6401 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, California with a Celebration of Life to follow at the family home, 1695 Grand Avenue, Piedmont, California.
