John... I last saw you when you, Barbara, Alice, Brenda and Blas all came over to Berkeley just a few short months ago. I deeply appreciate your kindness and support. We've all stayed connected since I met you all back in 1996, and while I am heartbroken by the news of your transition, I am thankful that you are in a place where there is no discomfort or worry. Dear Barbara, family and friends,
I offer my deepest sympathies to you for John's passing. It seems like yesterday we were masked up and working with your bee hives, sitting at your dining room table discussing your trips to Palestine or talking at Rosemary's about the Catholic newspaper.
I remember John with the Y putting me to shame by being able to do chin-ups and lifting heavier weights,all with a friendly, calm, quiet smile.
I miss you all from Indiana. As they say, you can leave California and your friends but you still take them with you.

John was part of a group that were regulars at the Warriors games and for the Oakland A’s. We enjoyed hours of cheering for our hometown heroes. We also commuted together to Sf and enjoyed the morning gab fest. I also learned about Johns second career raising chickens and bees.
I remember the timbre of his voice,
We remember a shared meal.
John will be missed but always remembered
In recollection, in mind, by us, by many
And not just family, friends, and neighbors.
In the grander neighborhood of this world
The changes he worked for, the improvements
And justice he worked for and effected
Even among many who may not know his name or face
These persist out of mind, his imprint on so many,
On the world.
