Thank you for sharing how my uncle left an imprint in your life.
John Henry Doyle was a big inspiration in my decision to make my career in Theatre Arts. When I graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1968 I was planning to major in Business Administration. One day walking on the SF City College campus a very dynamic man (John H. Doyle) handed me a flier about auditions for a play , The Duplex. I told him that I was not an actor but he had 100 reasons why I should try….so I did. To my surprise I was cast and a NEW world was presented to me. I changed my major from Business to Theare Arts. I earned my Bachelor of Arts, Secondary Credential, Master of Arts & Community College Credential in Theatre Arts. I taught drama at the secondary & college level, teaching & directing for 36 years. I had a successful fulfilling caeer because of John. He told me to follow my dreams and to listen to my heart. Words that I continue to live by even today. Why do we wait until someone is gone to say THANKS. John Henry Doyle THANK YOU for sharing your love of the theatre, THANK YOU for your words of advice, THANK YOU for keeping the theatre relevant to the Black community. John I would say rest in peace but I'm sure you are producing & directing your first production in heaven. So I'm going to say Break-a-Leg John from your protege, Linda Jackson-Whitmore
To the Doyle Family and Gloria T. When I think about John, I remember his "larger than life" spirit and generosity, our times on Post & Broderick and that VW bus that got us to and from SF State. His deeds and our memories of him will bring laughter, comfort and peace until…….
and so it is…..my heartfelt condolences to the whole family; those sharing blood as well as the extended family. We have lost a warrior and director extraordinaire; a warrior in the 'movement', a father, brother, uncle and grandfather who gushed over his grandchildren evidencing the gentleness of this giant. Love one, you gotta love them all, those Doyle's; I thank John for his friendship, his spirit will remain with me, always…and so it is…. treskunoff…..
My condolences and wishes for peace to the family. John was truly one of a kind. Even though I had not seen him for many years, he left a lasting positive impression on me from our days at San Francisco State U.
