Jennifer Young Chin's Obituary
Jennifer Young Chin was born on June 22, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She passed away at the age of 77 on May 22, 2024 in Alameda, California where she had resided for the past 50 years. Jennifer was incredibly loving, artistic, and generous, enjoying many passions over her lifetime.
Jennifer was the eldest of three children. Growing up, she liked listening to music, spending time with her friends & family, and caring for animals including her pet parakeet. She graduated from W.R. Farrington High School in 1964. Following high school, she attended San Francisco State University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts. Jennifer was known for being social, and was fond of congregating with others. She was also quite ambitious, and had her pursuits set on furthering her education in public health. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned her Masters Degree in Public Health in 1971. Upon graduation, Jennifer began working at the San Francisco Department of Public Health as a Health Educator.
While living in the Bay Area, she met her husband, Benny Chin. They were married in 1975, and two years later welcomed a son, Kenneth Michael. Four years later Lauren Marie was born, and 18 months after that Catherine Rose. Above all, family was Jennifer’s pride and joy. She was a devoted wife & mother, and later an adoring Tutu (which means grandmother in Hawaiian), to four vibrant grandchildren.
Jennifer was thoughtful and kind. She followed her dreams, which led her to be an enthusiastic quilter, gardener (including bonsai), baker, sewer, and crafter. After retirement, she volunteered at a local elementary school teaching children how to knit, and at First Covenant Church in Oakland, where she co-led a children’s bible study group.
Jennifer is predeceased by her mother Sylvia, father Michael, and brother Randall. She is survived by her husband Benny, brother Craig, sister-in-law Ying, children Kenneth, Lauren (Erick), & Catherine (Justin), and grandchildren Lucas, Malulani, Benjamin, & Zenon.
Memorial service arrangements will be held at 2:00pm, June 23, 2024, at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, California.
