Jennie Chin's Obituary
Jennie (Leong) Chin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, in Concord, CA, surrounded by family. A Bay Area native, Jennie was born in San Francisco on August 24, 1924, and raised in Oakland as the youngest of six siblings. She attended Oakland Technical High School where she sang in the choir. Jennie and her husband of 70 years, William Chin, met at a dance at the Oakland Scottish Rite Temple. They remained close sweethearts while Bill served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and the two married upon his return. Jennie and Bill settled in Berkeley, where she worked at the Naval Supply Center before taking time off to raise their three daughters. She later went back to work at Cunocar Accounting Service where she was employed for 20 years. Jennie enjoyed traveling with her husband and maintained close relationships with her immediate and extended family. She is survived by her daughters Sandra Burghardt (Douglas), Deborah Rokeach (Martin), and Barbara Rice (Earl); grandchildren Adrienne Barnes (Marcus), Andrea Hames-Frazier (Vince), Daniel Rokeach, and Jessica Rice; great-grandchildren Bryson, Anaya, Corey, and Nora; and siblings Lily and Alice. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, November 28 at 11:00 A.M. at the Soda Center on the campus of St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, the Arthritis Foundation, VITAS (Hospice) Community Connection or a non-profit charity of your choice.
