Jason G. Som's Obituary
Jason G. Som, 88, passed away peacefully in Oakland, California on October 30, 2019.
He was born in Oakland, California on October 28, 1931. The youngest of four sons in the Som family, Jason found his first job when he was ten years old, working in the grocery store of a family friend. His three brothers all trained as butchers and acted as Jason’s protectors as he was growing up. All four boys served in the US Armed Services around the time of the Korean War.
After his military service, Jason finished his last year at UC Berkeley, earning a degree in Public Health. He went on to receive a Masters degree in Environmental Health also from UC Berkeley. He spent many years as an Environmental Specialist for Alameda County.
Jason is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Constance Som, his two sons Rodrick Som (Anna) and Randall Som (Kazuko) and his grandchildren Vanessa, Justin and Drake. Jason loved his children and grandchildren going out for family dinners and vacationing at the family time share in Maui. He will be missed by all who knew him as he was a person who could always evoke a laugh or a smile.
Friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Life of Jason Som on Sunday, November 10, 2019 in the Chimes Chapel at the Chapel of the Chimes Oakland, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. A viewing will be held at 1 pm followed by the service at 2 pm. A reception will be following at 5 pm.
