Jane Low Cheng's Obituary
Jane was born as Low Shok Yen in Kwai Kok Village, China on April
11, 1929 to Low Lok Ming of Kwai Kok Village and Low Shui Wan
Fang of Ho Cheung Village. She grew up in China with her brother and
friends and lived a childhood full of mischief and fun.
In 1947, she married Henry Pong Cheng (Fong Wah Kay) and
immigrated to America. Jane arrived with few employment prospects,
but she quickly picked up a number of skills, working as a cook, .
seamstress, cannery worker, baby sitter, and other odd jobs to make
ends meet.
Jane and Henry eventually settled in Centerville, California and worked
as farmers, growing tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, cauliflowers, corn,
watercress, and mushrooms. Henry passed away in 1961, leaving behind
Jane and five children: Frances, Tyrone, Calvin, Steven, and Jennifer.
To support her family, Jane went into the rental business, with
assistance from her children. Frances and her daughter-in-law Laurita
would assist with management while Tyrone, Steven, and Jennifer
assisted with painting and cleaning atid Calvin took care of repairs.
Despite hardship early on, through frugality, resourcefulness, and hard
work, Jane’s family enjoyed commercial success and financial
independence. Jane lived a good life, loving her children and
grandchildren, traveling the world, and giving generously to charitable
organizations.
