James J. Perry's Obituary
With profound love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of James Joseph Perry, who passed away peacefully at the remarkable age of 93. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Frank and Josephine Petrie Perry, James was the youngest and last survivor of his siblings: Bishop Harold Perry, Drs. Fred and Frank Perry, Thelma Perry White, and Verlie Perry Kennedy.
A man of strength and dedication, James earned a Pharmacy degree from Xavier University before graduating from Howard University Dental School in 1957. In 1956, he married his lifelong partner, Earline Destouet LaSalle, embarking on a journey of love, family, and service.
James began his dental career as an Air Force dentist, stationed at Otis AFB in Massachusetts, where he proudly obtained the rank of Captain. In 1960, following the untimely passing of his brother Fred, he relocated his family to California and took over his brother’s dental practice in Oakland.
An inspiring leader, James balanced his private dental practice with his service as an Army Reserve dentist, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel as Commander of the 107th Dental Detachment. In 1983, Curtis joined his practice and they worked together until 1986. At that point, James left the private practice to continue his dental career with the State of California, serving as Chief of the Dental Department at San Quentin Prison. Dr. James Perry, Colonel, retired in 1996 from both the State of California and the United States military.
Beyond his professional achievements, James and Earline shared a love for bridge and bowling, often participating in lively leagues and tournaments. Weekends and holidays brought the family together at their beloved South Lake Tahoe cabin, where James instilled a love for skiing and the great outdoors in his children.
James’ enthusiasm for sports shone brightly in his love for tennis. He eagerly placed rackets in his children’s hands during their teenage years, fostering not only athletic skills but also treasured moments of togetherness. As a member of the Oakland Hills Tennis Club, James’ game flourished. He continued to rally with Curtis and competed with vigor well into his 80s. His dedication led to notable achievements, including a celebrated victory at the Alameda County Dental Society tennis tournament.
A lover of music, James often filled their home with melodies, singing with his warm voice while playing the family organ or piano. Known for his graceful moves on the dance floor, he especially relished Zydeco dancing during Mardi Gras celebrations.
James possessed a quiet strength, boundless patience, and a kind spirit that complemented Earline’s vibrant energy. Later in his career, he delighted family and friends with his humor, bringing laughter and smiles through his stories and jokes. He was an advocate for education, resilience, and the power of a positive outlook, inspiring everyone around him.
James and Earline shared 56 years of marriage until her passing in 2012. Their love and spirit lives on through their family: Curtis and Kim Perry and their two children, Aaron and Ashley; Ashley and Tommy Connelly’s daughters, Timber and Paloma; Linda and Patrick Lynch and their daughter, Alexandra; and Lisa and Bruce Hayek with their children, Daniel and Elise.
James lived a life of purpose, love, and a legacy of unwavering devotion to family, community and service to our country. While he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever inspire those who knew and loved him.
