James (Jim) Louis Nolin's Obituary
“James (Jim) Louis Nolin, Jr., 84, of Alameda, passed away on December 10, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 9, 1934. Jim graduated from the Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, and went on to receive a Bachelor’s of Arts in English from Villanova University. Scholastically he ranked first among English majors and third in the school of arts and sciences. He was a dean’s list student every semester, news editor of the university newspaper and associate editor of the yearbook. In addition he was treasurer of the Spanish club, secretary of Delta Pi Mu Fraternity in his sophomore and junior years, a member of the class steering committee, head of the publicity campaign for the Junior Prom and captain of his dormitory basketball team for three years. In his senior year, he was selected for the National Collegiate Who’s Who. He received a full tuition scholarship for law school at Villanova, but instead pursued and earned a Master’s in Education from NYU.
He moved to California from New York in 1959. He spent the majority of his career in business administration for the Boys’ Club of America and the Hospital of Alameda. During his time as Executive Director for the Alameda Boys’ Club, he was appointed Assistant National Chapter Chairman of the Boys’ Club Professional Association. He also ran a family business with his son in Alameda, Mike’s Custom Detail, for the last 20 years in his “retirement.” Over the years in the Bay Area, he had been a member of the Sierra Club, Kiwanis Club, Elks Club and held a position on the Alameda Board of Education. He was well-known and beloved by his family and their friends, especially for his remarkable wit and sense of humor. He was known to have crafted some elaborate jokes and experiences for his friends throughout the years. He spent a good deal of time with his grandchildren (and their pets) in his final years and will be dearly missed by them all.
He is survived by his son Michael James Nolin of Oakland, and daughter Amy Carolyn LeBold of Orinda, grandchildren, Kefren Esieh Gutierrez (13), Owen James LeBold (8), Mykayla Love Nolin (7), and Delilah Jo LeBold (5).
His family is having a celebration of life event that is open to all family and friends on January 12, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Elks Club in Alameda at 2255 Santa Clara Ave.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the American Cancer Society in his name.”
