I first met Irv (he was always just Irv) in 1946 at the University of Chicago in the weightlifting section of the gym. We met againin 1953 in the weight room of the Berkeley YMCA. So we spent a lot of time together working out. What’s that adage, friendsthat lift weights together….?Our activities together went beyond the barbell world. Two I especially remember are 1) hiking the trails in Marin with Thelmaand Timmie the dog with beers afterwards at the Tourist Club and 2)swimming in Thelma’s lap pool at the house in Berkeley destroyed in the ’92 fire. There’s no doubt that Irv is the oldest and longest friend I’ve ever had which makes him the best one too.
I first met Irv in 1946 at The University of Chicago in its weightlifting facility. In 1953, we met again in the weight room of theBerkeley YMCA. So we spent much time together straining to get one more rep or to lift the barbell just once when trying fora personal record. There were less weightier activities too – hiking the the trails in Marin, swimming in the lap pool of the housedestroyed by the ’92 fire, lunches, dinners, and all the things done with friends.Irv was certainly the oldest and as I think about it the longest and best friend I ever had.
Always Striving to be StrongThe one who we called IRV and also Irving Eugene Kestin now live with us in this moment because we are here in this moment. We accept that IRV is now in a place where his spirit and soul will be call upon to now be that “power lifter” for the greater good of mankind.Always with Love,The Berkeley YMCA
