Irma A. Metoyer's Obituary
Irma Alfretta Metoyer – Davis was born in New Orleans, LA. on October 8, 1925 to Arthur and Mary Eugene. Irma was the third of four children including brothers Arthur and Lawrence and a sister Mabel. After graduating high school, Irma moved to Berkeley, CA to live with her aunt Letitia Monroe (Eugene) and cousins Norma Thomas (Monroe) and Odile Fisher (Monroe). Quickly acclimating to life in the Bay Area, Irma served her family and community working as a secretary at the Naval Supply Center in Oakland, California. Irma was not only administratively resourceful during her career, her natural beauty afforded her the opportunity to be chosen by the Tribune newspaper as a pinup girl in their award winning publication. A radiating beauty inside and out, in the course of her working and social activities she met her first husband, a young, upwardly mobile attorney, Carl Metoyer. The loving union of Carl and Irma created three beautiful children Carl Jr., Ronald and Monique. After the last of the children graduated from high school, Irma resumed her administrative career and went to work for the Oakland Unified School District until she retired in 2004. Prior to her retirement, Irma met and later married Herbert Davis, who among other things shared her love for good music and good friends. Trips to the Monterey Jazz Festival and Yoshi’s jazz club became the norm as they built their life together. For more than 50 years, Irma cultivated a friendship with Odessa Broussard and shared a lifetime of wonderful memories. Irma frequently enjoyed spending time with her Friday night poker buddies, her social club – the Unique Elites, bridge groups and regular trips to Las Vegas and Reno. Irma was a dedicated Raiders and Warrior’s fan and enjoyed playing in Monday Night Football and Super Bowl pools.
Irma passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her husband and children on January 15, 2016.
