Ing Siong Ting's Obituary
Ing Siong, which means ‘forever good fortune and prosperity’, was born in Sibu, Malaysia on March 21st, 1928. At the age of 18, he went to Singapore to study at college. After graduation, Ing Siong taught English at primary school for two years. There, he met his wife Patricia and they married in 1953. Ing Siong and Patricia were married for 65 years.
In 1957, Ing Siong started his own business, Sarawak Timber Trading Co Ltd. The company imported timber from Malaysia and sold it in Hong Kong to construction and furniture manufacturing businesses. Ing Siong understood that in order for his business to be successful, he would have to control his own freight and shipping lines, which would allow him to transport timber at an on-demand basis from Malaysia. At the height of his career, Ing Siong set the timber trading prices for both the supply and demand market in Hong Kong. Ing Siong retired in 1996 and emigrated to California, settling in the Bay Area.
In his spare time, Ing Siong enjoyed going for daily walks, driving his Lexus, and spending time with his family. He often cooked large dinners for his wife, children and grandchildren on the weekends. Some dishes that were enjoyed and will be sorely missed by his family are his infamous red Russian vegetable soup, Lotus root soup and pan-fried cod. His family also fondly remembers Ing Siong’s love for a good steak when dining out.
Ing Siong valued education, as he always said it would be the gateway to a lifetime of success. He took great pride when each of his three children, Irene, Paul and Stephen received their masters and doctorate degrees. Ing Siong’s legacy lives on in his grandchildren Nicholas Ting, Thomas, William and Stacey Fong and his great-grandchild, Lucas Fong. He will be missed by his friends and family, and will be forever remembered as a devoted, loving and generous husband, father and grandfather.
