Herbert Ray Mabee's Obituary
Remembering………
Herbert (Herb) Ray Mabee was born on July 8th, 1928 to Mary and Roy Mabee in Seymour, Iowa. He was their fourth son. His three brothers, Kenneth, Charles, and William preceeded him in death.
Herb was in the US Navy from 1946 to 1949, serving on the US Aircraft Carrier Boxer. While there he met, and became best friends with Bill Sowell.
Herb came to Oakland, California in 1946, where he met his wife, JoElla Sowell, through her brother Bill. They were married by Dr. Patten (while she was holding a revival) in Los Angeles, CA., on September 24th, 1949. They were married for 67 years, a blessed and faithful marriage. To this union was born two sons, Carl and Joseph, and two daughters, Evelyn and Mary.
Herb accepted Christ in 1946 under the ministry of Dr. Patten, and faithfully served God in whatever way he could until his death.
Herb worked the printing press at Christian Temple, with Bro. Richard Moncher, and Christian Cathedral for many years. He drove the bus for the Patten Academy choirs for several years. He served as an usher and head usher for many years, also working security on the Patten Campus. He was a Teamster, driving trucks for many years. After Herb retired he was at JoElla’s side helping her prepare and cook many dinners for family and friends, and they’ve blessed many of us! He also continued to volunteer on the campus. Herb also attended the Patten Bible School over the years.
Herb is remembered as a strong, yet gentle man, one that served wherever he could. One of his favorite scriptures that he marked was, 2 Peter 3:14, “…..make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at Peace with Him”
Evelyn and Mary said we called him, Daddy, Pops, and Papa! He had many names. He was loved by so many that met him, and he loved his family and friends unconditionally! He would do anything for his wife and children!
Herb is survived by his wife JoElla, his children, Carl, Evelyn, Mary, and Joseph, His granddaughter Rebecca Mabee, his in-laws, who were like his brothers and sisters, and many nieces and nephews, and a host of dear friends.
Herb went into the presence of his Savior, peacefully in his sleep, on April 29th, 2016, at the age of 87. He was at the Veteran’s Hospital in Palo Alto, Ca.
Herb’s final resting place will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetary, Dixon, CA.
