Henry W. Foo
1923-2015
Henry W. Foo, devoted father and husband and veteran of World War II, died Nov. 23 from complications caused by an infection. He was 92.
A native of China, he was three when he arrived in the U.S. with his parents, Ching Foo and Choy Shee Foo. They made San Francisco their home. Eventually, the family would move to Oakland where they operated a grocery.
Mr. Foo, a McClymonds High School graduate, served in the Air Force, loading bombers in the European Theater. Through his military service, he was automatically granted naturalization.
A few years after the war’s end, he met and wed Eileen Chin; together they had two children. The couple resided in Alameda.
Mr. Foo held several jobs in his life – butcher, insurance salesman, and railroad clerk, working more than two decades for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In retirement, he and Eileen enjoyed vacations and cruises overseas. Mr. Foo was an ardent fan of all Bay Area sports teams.
Mr. Foo was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, and brother, Warren. He is survived by his daughter, Karen, and son, Rodney; sisters, Annie and Lola; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Dec. 14, 11 a.m. memorial service is scheduled at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to a local food bank of your choice.
