Harry Chew's Obituary
Harry Chew
February 21, 1925 – July 19, 2018
We regretfully announce the passing of Harry Chew, aged 93, in Alameda from heart failure. He was surrounded by his loving family and devoted friends.
Harry is predeceased by his beloved wife Pauline. He is survived by his son Tom, daughter-in-law Monique, daughter Kathy and son-in-law Gregg Yamamoto; grandchildren Tyler Chew and his partner Kaili Kuo, Ezekiel Chew-Hodges and Scott, Jacob, and Megan Yamamoto; and great granddaughter Tahira Chew.
Harry was a native of Oakland, born at home and raised on the edge of Oakland’s Chinatown. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Oakland High. He was a member of the Oakland Chinese Presbyterian Church where he met Pauline. Upon his graduation from high school, Harry was employed as a truck mechanic with Pan American Airlines. He worked his way up to become an airline mechanic, working on the fleet, including the storied China Clipper, and retired after 37 years as the Manager of Operations Training.
Never one to remain idle, Harry embarked on a new opportunity as an accountant with Xintec Corporation which later became Convergent Laser Technologies. Harry was still employed with Convergent at the time of his death.
Harry spent many years with Pauline skiing, playing tennis and hosting many social gatherings for family and friends. An avid traveler, Harry was able to explore the world while travelling for work with Pan Am, and through his many vacations with Pauline, family members and friends. He had just returned from a trip to Norway and Iceland in June of 2018.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday July 29, 2018 at 11 am at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA.
