Gloria Jean Johnson's Obituary
Remembering
Gloria Jean (Johnson) Thompson was born in Oakland, CA, On June 18, 1945. She entered Heaven’s gate on June 15, 2016. She was the first born to the loving and proud parents, of the late Robert and Ruby Johnson.
She attended Oakland Technical High School where she graduated in 1962. She continues her studies at Merritt College and soon began to working at Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation at age 19.
In June of 1965 she married Joseph Thompson, and from that union of 10 years, it resulted in her one and only beloved son Darryl Thompson.
In July 2003, Gloria celebrated her retirement from Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation after 38 years of service. During that time she received many awards and certificates and recognition for her work and volunteer service. Once during a company picnic, Gloria was the top seller of 900 raffle tickets winning her $25 dollars Certificate from Capwell’s.  A volunteer crisis counselor at Tri-Valley Haven (a domestic violence center/shelter) located in Livermore where she became a certified Sexual Assault Advocate and did crisis intervention for clients during the past decade right up until her illness.
Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and is a life-long member of FAME, Oakland and has served diligently under the leadership of five pastors.  She is a long-time member of the Steward Board.  She joined the former Sarah Allen Women’s Missionary Society (WMS), now the Melba B. Woods WMS, in 1972 and has provided continuous and meritorious to the WMS wherever needed and called upon. Her service has included:  Local WMS President; California Conference WMS President;  Episcopal District WMS First and Second Vice-President;   Connectional WMS Quadrennial Delegate;  attendee to  Connectional  WMS Executive Board sessions;  awardee of  Cleo B. Love Hall of Recognition (25 years of service); and  awardee of  WMS Life Member status (2007).   She served as General Conference Delegate in 2004, 2008, and 2012.   She served as administrative support to the late Bishop Vernon R. Byrd and to Presiding Elder Booker T. Guyton (Oakland-San Joaquin District).
Gloria is survived by her son Darryl J. Thompson Sr. and her daughter-law Ingrid J. Thompson and her two grandsons Joseph M. Thompson and Darryl J. Thompson Jr. She is predeceased by her brother Michael B. Johnson.
Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 11:00am at First AME Church 3701 Telegraph Avenue Oakland, California
