Georgetta Mae Woods' Obituary
Georgetta (Yebby) Woods gently passed away on January 23, 2002. She was the widow of Jack Woods and is survived by her niece, Martha Montgomery of Berkeley, and several cousins. Born at home to George and Ella Yebby on January 25, 1917 at 1276 8th Street, Oakland, CA, she attended public schools in Oakland, graduated from University High and went on to study at San Francisco State College. Her original professional goal was to become a teacher, but she married Richard Dempsey and in 1941, they moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the Federal Power Commission and she worked for the United States Census Bureau. They divorced in 1942 and Mrs. Woods returned to the Bay area where she went to work for the United States Postal Service. She worked almost every position in her 31 years with the post office, ultimately becoming the first black female station superintendent in the Oakland Post Office. She married Jack Woods in 1965 and retired from the post office in 1973. She enjoyed traveling and in her retirement she pursued her passion for contract bridge. In 1998, she moved into the Berkshire Retirement Home and served on the Resident Board until her death. She was a keen and curious observer of the life around her and her presence and wit will be sorely missed by her many friends and family who could always rely on a pointed comment and a dash of wry aimed at the subject at hand. Her enduring strength, warm generosity, and intelligence were an important part of the lives of all those close to her.Friends are invited to Funeral Services at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue in Oakland on Monday, January 28, 2002, at 1:00pm. She will be inurned at the Chapel of the Memories.Chapel of the Chimes-Oakland(510) 654-0123 "Service of Marked Distinction"
