He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Flo Wong, four children and their spouses, Vansen Wong (Holly), Susan Mielke (Neal), Lori Zabel (Karl) and Georgette Wong (Charles Beadnall), and ten grandchildren, Brian, Anne, Gray, Stacey, Ted, Reed, Bradley, Lark, Emmett, and Lillie. Also surviving him are his sister Bik Chun Yu, brother Sherman Huang (Sue), and nephew and nieces Wayne, Gwen, Caroline, Wendy and Susan.
George was born in Baisha, Taishan, China. During the Sino-Japanese War, he was sent, at the age of 7, to the United States by boat with his uncle. He grew up in Fresno, and excelled in school and sports. At age 13, he began working to support his family both in the US and in China. He graduated with his B.S. from UC Berkeley in 1953 and with his M.D. from the University of California San Francisco in 1957. From 1958-1960, he served in the US Navy.
Over the next 40 years, he delivered approximately 4000 children from his thriving solo practice as an obstetrician/gynecologist in Fremont, Hayward, and San Ramon. He was a founding member and former President of the Chinese American Physicians Society.
George loved Cal Bears football, gardening, and Yosemite. Above all, he took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and is greatly missed. A private celebration of George’s life for family and friends is being planned. Thoughts, written or oral, to the family are welcome. Gifts in his memory may be made to the UCSF Foundation, Lockbox 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339 (please note “IMO George Wong/S0446” in the memo section).
