George Martin AhernMarch 28, 1921'July 24, 2009 George Ahern passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on July 24 at the age of 88. He was a third generation Oaklander, attending Saint Francis de Sales Grammar School, University High School, University of California Berkeley and Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he became a Lieutenant Commander. He worked as a stock broker in Berkeley until the age of 79 and was an active member of several civic and community organizations including the Berkeley Breakfast Club, the Berkeley Lions Club, and the Serra Club where he made countless life-long friends.He leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise; his three children Carol Andersen, Tom and Gail Ahern and son and daughter-in-laws Richard Andersen and Beverly Ahern; and seven grandchildren'Kean, Heather and Scott Ahern, Michael and Kristen Andersen, and Megan and Nicholas Hoff. He also leaves behind a loving and close-knit extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, many nieces and nephews, and childhood friends.George’s love of life, of his family and all his friends and his irrepressible sense of humor will be greatly missed, but we’re sure he is already entertaining a host of angels in heaven with a few good stories and some sentimental Irish songs. God speed!A visitation will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, on Thursday evening, July 30th from 5 to 8pm. A funeral mass will be performed at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 322 St. James Drive in Piedmont, on Friday, July 31st at 10:30am.
