Gayane Hartyunyan passed away peacefully at the age of 76 in Oakland, California on March 22nd, 2024, at 2.30 pm after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of Gayane’s life will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave Oakland, CA 94611. The visitation starts at 4:00 pm, and the service at 6.00. A funeral service for Gayane will be held in Yerevan, Armenia later this year.
Everyone who met Gayane knew her as an exceptionally insightful mind who stoked the curiosity of all around her, particularly her grandchildren. She was a wonderful giver of advice and an inspired chef. She loved taking long walks with her husband Ashot in the parks of Oakland, and cooking and feeding her family and friends. Above all else she dedicated her life to her children and her grandchildren, who she was so proud of. She was a strong, determined, and complex person. The world is dimmer without her.
Gayane was born in Yerevan, Armenia on May 28, 1948, to her parents Arshaluys and Susanna. She was the youngest of two. From an early age Gayane loved the outdoors and was fascinated by minerals.
Gayane met Ashot Avanesyan at Yerevan State University, where they both studied geology, and they married in 1972. Gayane and Ashot had two children, Lia, born in 1973, and Mher born in 1978.
Gayane is preceded in death by her parents, Arshaluys Harutyunyan and Susanna Isahakyan, and her sister Larisa Harutyunyan. Gayane is survived by her husband, Ashot Avanesyan; her daughter, Lia Avanesyan, son-in-law Avetik Eloyan, and their children Karen, Mikael, and Arpi of Lafayette, California; as well as her son, Mher Avanesyan, daughter-in law Hasmik Danghyan, and their children Ashot and Ani Avanesyan of Alameda, California.
