Gary H. Holt's Obituary
Gary Holt was a dutiful son, a faithful friend, and a brilliant artist. Born in San Francisco in 1937, Gary grew up a true native son of San Francisco, and served honorably in the US Marine Corps before his life of creative exploration and creativity led him to education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
A pioneering artist, Gary’s ceramic work spanned oceans and cultural divides in Japan, Korea, and even the future on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a potter and ceramic artist, Gary developed new techniques in ceramics and passed on his craft to others through a lifetime of teaching and mentoring. Gary never sought recognition, but repeatedly found it, as people from across the world recognized the purity of his dedication to creative exploration and artistic achievement.
As fulfilling and rich as Gary’s life was in art and creativity, Gary’s life was also filled with love, and he gave selflessly of himself to his family. Without reservation or condition, Gary accepted them into his home and his life, and gave them a legacy to call theirs. His loving wife, Yon Soon, and two children, Amy and Joohn, participate in his legacy and survive him as do his many loving friends.
