Obituary
Florence Lee Tam passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Alameda,
CA after a weekend of visiting with family and just a few days short of her 99th birthday.
Florence was born in San Francisco, CA to George Y. Lee and Young Fong Yee
(Florence Young), the third of four daughters and one son. After graduating from
Oakland High School, Florence attended the University of California in Berkeley for one
year before completing two years at Samuel Merritt Hospital School of Nursing of which
she had fond memories of her classmates. In 1948, Florence married her life-long
partner, Walter Patrick Tam, with whom she raised two daughters and three sons.
Florence was devoted to the Chinese Presbyterian Church in Oakland where she taught
Sunday school and English as a second language classes, ran the plant booth at the annual
bazaar, and served as a deacon.
Florence is survived by her sister Esther Maynard (William) of Alameda, brother Lester
Lee of Oakland, daughters Patricia Tam of Oakland and Beatrice Dong (Harvey) of
Alameda; sons David Tam (Linda) of Hercules, Lawrence Tam of Hayward, and Edward
Tam of Oakland, three grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by
her sisters Jayne Tam (Joseph, Sr.) of La Mesa, CA and Frances Fong (George) of
Alameda and parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, 11 am to 12:30 pm, at
Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA, with burial service to follow
at Mountain View Cemetery, 5000 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, CA.
