Evelyn Gingee Conhon's Obituary
Evelyn Gingee Con Hon was born on September 7, 1949, in Oakland, California. Evelyn was the oldest child and only daughter of William and Eleanor Louie. She had two younger brothers, Arthur and Dennis. They grew up in Oakland Chinatown, and later the family moved to China Hill in Oakland. Evelyn attended Lincoln Elementary, Westlake Junior High, and Oakland High School. She attended and graduated from Laney College. She retired after working as an Executive Secretary for the California Public Utilities Commission for 40 years.
In February 1974 Evelyn went to a birthday party and met Mateo. They dated for a year and married on December 21, 1975, which led to a strong marriage of 48 years. They were blessed with a son Brian. Together they raised their family in San Leandro.
Evelyn had many interests which included scrapbooking, shopping, and cruising. She traveled on over 35 cruises with destinations like Alaska, the Bahamas, Panama, Mexico, and her favorite Hawaii. The cruise ships were also places where she could buy and collect paintings that she loved. Thomas Kinkade was her favorite artist. When she wasn't traveling, she was home scrapbooking and watching movies and game shows on TV.
She was a long-time member of the Bay Area Chinese Bible Church. She was very religious and went to church every Sunday. She would carry candy and gospel tracts in her purse to hand out to people and spread the Word of God.
When Evelyn was in her 40s, she had a brain tumor which was removed successfully. In her late 50s, her kidneys started to fail, and she had to do dialysis. She was able to receive a kidney transplant when she was in her 60s. Her kidneys ended up failing again in 2020, and she had to resume dialysis. In February 2023 her body could not absorb nutrients which caused her to have low blood pressure. With low blood pressure the dialysis treatments could not be completed. Soon after, on February 12, 2023, Evelyn passed away. Although Evelyn had many health issues, she always faced them with grace and cheerfulness, and faith in God.
Evelyn is predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and Dennis. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Mateo, and her son, Brian; her sister-in-law, Ida, and her niece, Brianna, and nephew, Brandon; her sister-in-law, Stephanie, and her husband, Ron; her nephew, Jonathan, and niece, Virginia, and their families; and many cousins. Evelyn will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
