Ethel Helen Fong's Obituary
Ethel H. Fong, 87, of Oakland, CA died July 14, 2001 from complications following a stroke suffered a month earlier. She was born in Morenci, Arizona in 1913, one of seven children, and came to San Francisco looking for work while still a teenager. Her parents and four surviving siblings later moved to the Bay Area also. She married Alfred Fong in 1941, and they settled in Oakland following Al’s discharge from the Navy near the end of World War II. Al’s family was the original owner of Confucius; a well-known restaurant on Lakeshore Avenue for many years. Widowed in 1958, Ethel went on to realize her and Al’s dream of sending their three children through college. She worked in the restaurant business for many years, and retired when she was in her early 70’s. She kept in touch with a large circle of friends, and frequently hosted holiday parties for her extended family. She is survived by her sister Mary Amo of Pacheco, CA; and son Randy Fong of Greenbrae, CA, his wife Teresa, and their sons Alex and Adam, her daughter Catherine Clark of Woodinville, WA, her husband Robert, and their children Leila and Dale, and daughter-in-law Pat Hanlon of Aurora, CO. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on August 11, 2001, 10:00 AM, at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, followed by a reception at a local restaurant.
