ERNIE GOMEZ DEL ROSARIO's Obituary
Ernie Gomez Del Rosario passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on April 29, 2018, in Hayward, CA.
He was born in Tondo Manila, Philippines on February 19, 1925, to Catalina Gomez and Lorenzo Del Rosario . He was one of 14 children.
He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19 and served as a steward on the USS Jackson and the
USS OKANOGAN as well as shore duty in Lemoore and San Diego, California.
He met the love of his life in Berkeley California and married Violeta “Letty” Carmen Perez September 15, 1951. Together they had 8 children and lived in Oakland for over 30 years.
After he retired from the Navy in 1964, he began employment with the Oakland Unified School District until his 2nd retirement in 1987.
He had many passions and hobbies such as fishing, carpentry, making Filipino star lanterns , making kites from parachute material , etc. His attention to detail was incredible.
Ernie always told funny stories and jokes just to get a laugh or make someone smile.
His children gathered at his bedside each holding on to him. His wife had his hand in hers and they all sang to him the songs he taught them until he could sing no more. Ernie took his last breath soon after.
He is survived by his Children Victoria Layson ( Roy) Gavino Del Rosario(Lillia),
John Gabriel Del Rosario (Cynthia), Teresa Pacita Walsh(Jim), Catalina Carmen Waddington( Erick), Isabela Tigno(Glenn), Lorenzo Miguel Del Rosario(Shirley), Christopher Emanuel Del Rosario (Evelyn)
Beverly Del Rosario (Daniel), 24 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
Ernie is also survived by his sister Rosario “Charito” Canapi.
He was preceded in death by his youngest child Antonio Daniel Del Rosario in 2014.
Our lives have changed and he will be painfully missed.
