Ernestine Jang-Holl's Obituary
Ernestine Jang-Holl
01/06/1926 to 03/20/2014
Ernestine Jang-Holl was born on January 6, 1926, in Hou Tao Village, Chung Shan, Canton Province, China. Her maiden name was Jang Ein Hin, known as Hall Tai.
She married Hall Wai Hong when he went back to China in 1947. She married in a formal white wedding dress and her husband to be dressed in a tuxedo, including a top hat and spats. Shortly, they left China to live in San Francisco, in the North Beach, on Powell St.
In addition to having and raising five children, she also was working for a subcontractor, sewing Levi jeans. She learned English at the local church and also by listening to country western music on the radio.
In 1956, Ernestine’s husband moved the family to Berkeley, opening their first restaurant, naming it Golden Rose. In 1962, they bought a building on the corner of San Pablo Ave and Dwight Way to open a larger restaurant. After Hall Wai Hong died, she opened the third Golden Rose restaurant in Palo Alto, CA.
Ernestine surpassed the death of her husband (Hall Wai Hong aka Jang Sing Lun), daughter (Susan), and son (Nelson).
She will be dearly missed by her surviving son, Norman Jang Hall and wife Macy, son Warren Jang and wife Deanne, daughter Jenny Hall and Husband Ross Demaree, and grandchildren, Michael, Breanna, Richard Carnigalia, David, Mei-Ling, Cameron and Kayomi.
In the end, Ernestine always had her mind still on business. She loved to eat and travel.
The Holl/Hall Family truly appreciates your presence today and thank you for your condolences.
