Ernest Radez's Obituary
Ernest Radez, 92, formerly of San Mateo, passed away July 20, 2012 at his home in San Francisco. He died of natural causes.”Ernie,” as he was known to all, was the son of Katherine and Joseph Radez of Richmondville, NY. After graduating as the valedictorian of Richmondville Central High School in 1937, he pursued a sports career as a pitcher for the Albany (NY) Senators and the Pittsfield (MA) Electrics, at one time pitching against Ralph Kiner in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.He joined the U.S. Army Air Force on July 7, 1942, serving in Squadron A 340th Bombardment Group where he was promoted from Corporal to First Lieutenant. After being honorably discharged in November 1945, he attended and graduated from the University of Arizona.Ernie married his Betty (nee Elizabeth Traver) on January 1, 1944 at Christ Church in Red Hook, NY. Over the course of 62 years of marriage, Ernie and Betty raised two children, Richard and Patricia, who in turn with their spouses, Bonny Radez and Will King, gave them four grandsons: Wesley and Robin Radez and Michael and Matthew King.Ernie worked for IBM Corporation for 38 years. After his retirement in 1986, he and Betty traveled extensively and enjoyed the company of their children and grandchildren as well as two wonderful granddaughters-in-law, Kathleen Vermazen Radez and Siobhan Steyn King.The family is very grateful for the care given to Ernie by the staff at Vintage Golden Gate, his personal physician Carolyn Welty, M.D., Care For Seniors, Hospice by the Bay and UCSF Home Health.Ernie will later be interred with full military honors in Arlington Cemetery, joining his beloved Betty who pre-deceased him on December 17, 2006.
