Emil Joseph Zugnoni's Obituary
Born to Emil and Mary Zugnoni on November 14, 1914, in Oakland. Died December 18, 2010, in Stollwood Convalescent Hospital at St. John’s Retirement Village in Woodland. Emil was predeceased in 2002 by his wife of 59 years, Margaret. He is survived by his son John and wife Jeanette of Alameda and daughter Mary McCurdy and her husband Gary McCurdy of Woodland; grandchildren Gina Preciado, Daniel and wife Yujung McCurdy, Patricia Moore and Paul and wife Sophie, David and Emily Zugnoni, and great-grandchildren Justin, Caitlin and Christian McCurdy and Jessica and Alex Moore. Also survived by his brother Arthur and Arthur’s wife Stella of San Leandro, his nephews Michael and Randy and his niece Theresa. Emil was a graduate of Berkeley High School, Class of 1932. He retired from the Albany Police Department in 1971 after working for 25 years. He also worked at the University of California Gill Tract and Golden Gate Fields race track. He was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II who landed in Normandy 10 days after D-Day to participate in the liberation of France. He and Margaret were longtime parishioners of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church of Berkeley, where he served as a lector. He enjoyed vacations at Twain Harte and travelling to Europe and Hawaii with his family. He was also active in Albany Little League and followed the San Francisco Giants, the California Golden Bears football team and his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s athletic teams. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. John’s Retirement Village of Woodland for the loving care provided to Emil and Margaret over the past 10 years. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. The vigil service will be held on Wednesday, December 22 at 7 p.m., also at Chapel of the Chimes. The Funeral Mass will be said on Thursday, December 23 at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, 1145 Gilman Street at Cornell Avenue, Berkeley beginning at 11 a.m. Committal to follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Oakland. After the committal, there will be a reception in the Saint Ambrose Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Yolo Wayfarer Mission, 207 Fourth Street, Woodland, CA 95695 or to St. John’s Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Avenue, Woodland, CA 95695 or to the Saint Mary’s College High School Development Fund, 1294 Albina Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94706.
