Elmo Tamburrino's Obituary
Elmo Tamburrino
October 30, 1928 – October 15, 2015
Elmo Tamburrino of Concord, CA, aged 86, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon October 15 at Manor Care in Walnut Creek, CA surrounded by family and friends. He had been receiving care due to a stroke that had occurred late 2013. Originally from SS. Cosma e Damiano (named after twin saints), Italy (Lazio region) and longtime resident of Oakland’s Rockridge District. He was the son of local barber, Damiano Tamburrino and migrated after World War II with his mother, Maria Tamburrino, recently deceased twin brother Gualtieri and younger brother, Benedetto.
After settling in California and earning citizenship mid 1952 he returned to Italy to marry Mafalda Tamburrino (Mazzucco) in 1955. Initially locating off of College Avenue and having their first son, Pietro Antonio, they moved to their long time home on Monroe Avenue. It was there they were blessed with three more children, Franco, Carlo and Caterina.
Elmo was a highly skilled carpenter and had a nearly 30 year career of vital service at the University of California, Berkeley. He belonged to the local Carpenter’s Union #713 with a tenure of 65 years. With love and devotion, he and his family thrived with local family and friendships. His family fondly remembers his love of traditional Sundays and outings to local parks, Joaquin Miller and Redwood and getaways to California locales such as Lake Tahoe, Russian River, and the Monterey coast. Many trips to Europe, particularly his native Italy, solidified his family’s connection to roots and family relationships abroad.
Upon retirement he decided to slow down and moved to Concord, CA. His lifelong love of gardening came to true fruition. He also thoroughly enjoyed extended trips to Italy as he fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a home back in his native home town.
Love and devotion to family guided all his pursuits; there was great enjoyment of his children and grandchildren.
Elmo is survived by his beloved wife, Mafalda Tamburrino; sons Tony, Franco, Carlo and daughter Caterina. Son and daughter in laws, Chris and Paulette. He had seven grandchildren, Franco, Danielle, Francesca, Domenic, Christian, and twins, Alessandro and Giancarlo. He had three great grandchildren, Taylen, Jayden, and Brianna. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, and relatives.
He is preceded by his recently deceased twin brother and twin soul, Gualtieri Tamburrino (July 29, 2015) and survived by brother, Benedetto.
