Eddie Earl Washington's Obituary
Eddie Earl Washington [67], passed away on September 12, 2013 in Oakland, California. He was born on April 28, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Willard and Ladonia (Gaffney) Washington.
During Edd’s youth, the family relocated to Stockton, California where he graduated from Franklin Sr. High in 1964. After high school, Edd attended San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California for 2 .5 years. Prior to completion of his studies, he withdrew from school and joined the United States Army where he served from February 27, 1967 to February 26, 1970 before being honorably discharged with a rank of SP5. While in the Army, Edd was the recipient of two medals; The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal 1st Award. After leaving the service Edd attended the University of California, Berkeley where he majored in Sociology, graduated with honors and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 17, 1972. He continued his education, graduating with a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, San Francisco on September 24, 1975.
Following college, Edd devoted his professional life to organizations focused on addressing social issues and improving the lives of individuals. Among the organizations that he worked for are the Bay Area Black United Fund (BABUF) where he held the position of Vice President of Planning, Allocations and Research and The Tides Foundation where he served as the Administrative Director.
Edd married Joyce Morris on February 14, 1982 in Oakland, California. They were married for 10 years. Edd had a keen interest in politics and enjoyed debating political issues. He was an avid reader, a die-hard Raiders fan, enjoyed Jazz music and had a dry sense of humor that took a bit of getting used to.
Edd was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Ladonia Washington and his brother, Willard Washington Jr..
Edd is survived by his son, Kai Washington of Oakland, California; his niece whom he raised, Latyana Lewis of Hercules, California; his brothers, Kenneth Washington of Vallejo, California and Duaine Washington of Oakland, California; his grandchildren, Kaia Mackey-Washington of Oakland, California and Camielle Mackey-Washington of Oakland, California and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes Oakland, 4499 Piedmont Ave at 1100 on October 12, 2013. Interment will occur in a private ceremony at The Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
