Douglas Anderson Dove's Obituary
Douglas A. Dove, 86, of Hayward, CA, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on May 2, 2023.
Doug was born on January 21, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Douglas and Elizabeth (Anderson) Dove. He graduated from Drexel University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, before switching careers and attending William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA for his teaching credential. Doug taught Physics at his Alma Mater, Central High School in Philadelphia and at Jenkintown High School, Jenkintown, PA. He married his wife, Janice Myers, on September 7, 1957. After retiring from teaching, they relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, CA to be closer to their son, Douglas R., and to find residential care for their special needs son, David A.
Doug was a man of strong faith—fully committed to the salvation to be found through belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a Bible teacher who often spoke in his church. He actively worked with youth groups, many of whom loving referred to him as “Uncle Doug.” He attended Sun Valley Bible Chapel in Lafayette, CA and prior to moving to CA, attended the Gospel Chapel Enfield in Oreland, PA.
Doug lived a full life and enjoyed many pursuits including playing violin with the Oakland Community Orchestra, going birdwatching with friends and family, sailing boats in the Caribbean, travelling throughout the US and Europe, collecting stamps, coaching HS track and baseball, serving on many boards, and doing the daily crossword, cryptogram and jumble puzzles in the paper. An avid home repair expert, he generously assisted his son on many DIY carpentry, plumbing and electrical projects. He was the loving “Pop-Pop” to his granddaughters Zoe and Ava Dove allowing them to have unlimited ice cream sundaes and building amazing forts in the living room. He was also legendary for his annual Easter Egg Hunts.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Janice, their 2 sons, Douglas R. (wife Uma Thomas) of Oakland, CA, and David A. of Antioch, CA; Two granddaughters, Zoe and Ava; One brother, David L. (wife Peggy) of Quarryville, PA; and several nieces and a nephew.
