Dorothea D. McGhee's Obituary
orothea McGhee was born April 12, 1923 to O.D. and Ella (Black) Dunbar during their missionary service in La Paz, Bolivia. She returned to South Dakota with her family when a year old, graduated from Huron High School in 1941, followed by studies in psychology and physical education, with her Bachelor’s Degree from MacMurray College (Illinois) in 1945, and her Master’s Degree from Washington University (Missouri) in 1947.
Dorothea (“Dottie”) was well known for her athletic abilities, her love of the outdoors, and her ability to bring a hug or a smile to almost everyone. In 1948, she visited her sister in California, and decided to stay. She met and married Earl McGhee in 1951 (died 2002), and afterward settled in Danville, California, where she taught at Charlotte Wood Middle School for 30 years.
Dottie was active in the community, coordinating after-school and summer recreation programs. Throughout her life, she passionately participated in many organizations to help and serve others. At Rossmoor she engaged herself in everything from golf to ceramics, and lawn bowling to high tea.
Active in her Church, she was a member of Danville Community Presbyterian, Berkeley First Presbyterian, and for the past 20 years, Grace Presbyterian Church in Walnut Creek, where she loved to worship, help and serve in meaningful ways, and put her faith in action.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Jean, Betty, and Jim. Grateful to have shared in her life are her sons and daughters-in-law, Lane and Kathy McGhee, Ridge and Linda McGhee, her seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
She passed on March 12, 2014. Memorial Service is 10:30am, Saturday April 5th, at Grace Presbyterian Church, 2100 Tice Valley Blvd, Walnut Creek, CA 94595.
