Mrs. Doris Lucille Austin's Obituary
Mrs. Doris Lucille Austin passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2015 in Oakland, California, at the age of 87. She was born in Texas November 11, 1927 to the parents of Edward A. and Louise H. Butler.
Mrs. Austin is survived by her husband Ernest H. Austin and daughter Allison L. Austin. A visitation will be held Monday, August 31, 2015 at Chapel of the Chimes 4499 Piedmont Avenue Oakland, California 94611, from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM, in the Chimes Chapel. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Allen Temple Church 8501 International Blvd, Oakland, CA 94621, from 11:00 AM. Flowers can be sent to Chapel of the Chimes, Allen Temple Church, and/or Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park.
Doris Lucille was born on November 11, 1927 in Denison Texas to the union of Edward Arthur and Louise Butler. She was the sixth of eleven children. She affirmed her relationship with God and was baptized at Beth Eden Church in Oakland, California.
Doris was educated in the Grayson County School District, graduating from Terrell High School, Denison, Texas in 1945. Following graduation, she moved to Oakland, California and resided with her oldest brother, Eddie Butler, and later with brother James and sister-in-law Hazel Butler. She started seasonal work at the Oakland Post Office where she met the love of her life, Ernest Austin. They were married in Carson City, Nevada on April 9, 1954. To this union they were blessed with one daughter Allison Louise.
Doris trained as a Key Punch Operator and was employed by the Oakland Naval Supply Station for 5 years. In 1960 she began working at Alameda County Administrative Office as a Data Entry Clerk and later the Data Entry Supervisor. She worked there for 24 years of dedicated and distinguished service. She joined the Allen Temple Church family in the early 1980’s and volunteered every Thursday to help prepare the Sunday church bulletins. Doris was an active participant in De Ida Spencer’s Circle.
Doris had many interests. She enjoyed travelling, attending musicals and shopping. She was a member of the American business Women’s Association for many years. She was an active member and rose to the rank of Unit Commander in the Disabled American Veterans Association. In addition, she was the Most Ancient Matron in the Golden Gate Court No. 4 of the Heroines of Jericho, Oakland, California.
