Donald Hay Kay Jew's Obituary
Donald Hay Kay Jew passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2018 in Oakland, CA. Born in Guangdong, China, Donald came to America when he was 16. He went to school and worked as a waiter, later becoming a military cook during WWII. In 1947 he married his wife, Martha, and they moved to Alameda, where they opened up their own restaurant, The Bamboo Kitchen, in 1948. In 1962, Donald moved his family of 6 to a bigger home in Oakland. Donald & Martha continued to run the restaurant for over 30 years. Upon retirement, they decided to travel the world. In between trips, Donald could be found playing mahjong or visiting a local casino, two of his favorite pastimes. Donald was a hard-working, self-educated, loving man who wanted nothing but the best for his family. He is greatly missed.
He was the beloved father (Ba Ba) of Sharon (Todd) Hallmeyer, Janice Risard, and Lester Jew; loving grandfather (Gung Gung) of Summer (Bryan) Bowers, Shana Hallmeyer, Stacy Hallmeyer, and Kadie (Robert) Jew-Fortner; endearing great grandfather (Bok Gung) of Mia (14), Colin (13), Elijah (11), Caleb (10), Logan (9), Preston (6), and Tabitha (1). He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jew, and his oldest son, Warren Jew.
