I'm truly saddened to hear about Dirk's passing. I met Dirk years ago through his brother, Rik. Rik and I shared the same last name in medical school where we spent four grueling years together. I remember that Rik was one of the most kind and considerate persons I'd ever met. He was genuinely concerned about my well-being when the going got tough. We both ended up working for Kaiser (folks often thought we were related as we were both Dr. Smith). But when I met his brother, Dirk, I was almost dumbfounded that Rik had a brother who was just as kind and caring. Two in one family!
I watched the video of the memorial service and was impressed with how well Dirk raised his sons. And Rik still has his characteristic laugh and humor. I could not find a contact email for Rik, so I hope you get this message that I'm truly sorry to hear of your family's loss. I learned the news today from a former employee at Kaiser Fremont and immediately went online to locate details. This was truly difficult to process, but I'm heartened to see that Dirk spent his last few years surrounded with love.
May he rest in peace. Loving wishes to the "Smith Brothers" and their families.
