Josie Camacho
Message to Diana: Diana, I will miss you deeply. I remember when you were just a kid and use to try and hang around me and Mary Jane. Mary Jane as your older cousin would tell you to get lost as older cousins or siblings do to the younger kids. I know I did the same to my 3 younger brothers growing up with 10 siblings. Remembering you at that young age, brings back wonderful childhood memories of growing up in Oakland. We use to walk from my house on 94th & Olive to 98th Avenue to get to Mary Jane and Andrea's home. That's when girls of color could walk down the street (somewhat safely). And then you grew up, went to work at Laney College and became so active in the union 790 at the time and later became 1021 with the merger. You were an amazing leader always standing up and fighting for your co-workers rights. Then, some years back you said, "I'm going to retire early so I can be less stressed and do things I want to do."
Diana, I also miss Mary Jane. We got into so much "good trouble" as Congressman Lewis would always say. Well you carried that legacy on getting into so much "good trouble".
Blessings and prayers in your memory. Tell Mary Jane hello for me. With much love and affection, Josie Camacho
